Many children need a little extra support to build strong early reading skills, without needing individual therapy.
Our Literacy Skills Groups are structured, small-group programs designed to support early readers through explicit, evidence-based literacy instruction in a supportive clinic environment, without the need for lengthy assessments
What Are Literacy Skills Groups?
Literacy Skills Groups are term-based small group programs that run once per week and focus on specific early literacy skills such as:
Children are grouped with peers who have similar skills, allowing targeted teaching in a motivating group setting.
How the Program Works
Who Is This Program For?
This program is ideal for children who need targeted literacy support, but not the intensity of individual therapy.
Who Is This Program Not For?
If a group is not the right fit, we will recommend more appropriate options.
How Children Are Placed Into Groups
To ensure groups work well for everyone, children are not enrolled automatically.
Instead, families complete a short placement form based on parent observations of their child’s current skills. This allows our clinicians to:
A formal assessment is not required to join the program.
What Progress Looks Like
Throughout the program, clinicians observe how each child participates and applies new literacy skills in the group setting.
At the end of the term, families receive a written summary outlining:
This may include progressing to another group, transitioning to individual therapy, or continuing with home and school-based support.

Here are some of the most common questions our new clients have:
How is this different from individual speech therapy?
Literacy Skills Groups are delivered in a small group setting and focus on specific early reading skills using structured, explicit teaching.
While children receive targeted support, this program does not provide the same level of individualisation as one-to-one therapy. For some children, individual therapy may be recommended instead.
Does my child need an assessment before joining?
No formal assessment is required.
Instead, families complete a short placement form based on parent observations of their child’s current skills. This allows our clinicians to determine whether a group program is appropriate and which group would be the best fit.
What age or year level is this program for?
Groups are not based on age or school year, but on literacy skill level.
Children are grouped with peers who have similar early reading skills, which helps ensure the pace of learning is appropriate and effective for everyone in the group.
What skills are targeted in the Literacy Skills Groups?
Each group has a specific literacy focus, such as:
How many children are in each group?
Groups typically include 3–5 children.
Smaller groups allow for targeted instruction while still providing the benefits of learning alongside peers. Some groups may include additional support staff to ensure children are well supported.
What happens if my child isn’t suitable for a group?
If a group program is not the right fit, we will recommend alternative options. This may include:
Our goal is to recommend the most appropriate support, not simply place children into groups.
Can I use NDIS or Medicare to fund this group?
NDIS funding can be used for this group if your NDIS goals align with the purpose of the group. NDIS client may need some additional services prior to starting such as a support plan development in line with NDIS requirements.
Private health funding sometimes covers group programs, you would need to check this with your health insurer.
Medicare rebates are only for individual therapy so will not be able to be used for this group.
What commitment is required?
Literacy Skills Groups run as a fixed term program (Weeks 2–10 Term 1).
Families commit to attending weekly sessions for the full program, as consistent attendance is important for progress and group cohesion. If a child misses a session, the fee still applies and some homework will be sent.
Will I receive feedback about my child’s progress?
Yes.
At the end of the program, families receive a written summary outlining:
This summary reflects your child’s participation and learning within the group setting.
Can my child continue in another group after this program?
In some cases, yes.
Depending on your child’s progress and current skill level, recommendations may include:
