Small-Group Support for Early Readers

Many children need a little extra support to build strong early reading skillswithout needing individual therapy.

Our Literacy Skills Groups are structured, small-group programs designed to support early readers through explicit, evidence-based literacy instruction in a supportive clinic environment, without the need for lengthy assessments

What Are Literacy Skills Groups?

Literacy Skills Groups are term-based small group programs that run once per week and focus on specific early literacy skills such as:

  • Letter–sound knowledge
  • Blending sounds to read words
  • Early decoding skills
  • Reading accuracy and confidence

Children are grouped with peers who have similar skills, allowing targeted teaching in a motivating group setting.

How the Program Works

  • When: Term-based (Weeks 2–10)
  • Session length: 45 minutes per week
  • Group size: 3–5 children
  • Location: In-clinic
  • Program length: 9-week block
  • Group Fee $720 for  9 week block.  Upfront payment $675

Who Is This Program For?

  • Literacy Skills Groups are suitable for children who:
  • Are struggling with developing sound-letter knowledge
  • Have difficulty blending words with 3, 4 and 5 sounds (eg big, clap, print)
  • Guess words rather than sound them out
  • Can participate in a small group with adult support
  • Would benefit from extra literacy support alongside classroom learning

This program is ideal for children who need targeted literacy support, but not the intensity of individual therapy.

Shape

Who Is This Program Not For?

  • Literacy Skills Groups may not be suitable for children who:
  • Require one-to-one support to manage behaviour or emotions
  • Have complex language or learning needs requiring individualised therapy
  • Are significantly overwhelmed by group learning environments
  • Require comprehensive literacy assessment or diagnosis

If a group is not the right fit, we will recommend more appropriate options.

How Children Are Placed Into Groups

To ensure groups work well for everyone, children are not enrolled automatically.

Instead, families complete a short placement form based on parent observations of their child’s current skills. This allows our clinicians to:

  • Confirm group readiness
  • Match children to the most appropriate group focus
  • Ensure learning pace is appropriate for all participants

A formal assessment is not required to join the program.

What Progress Looks Like

Throughout the program, clinicians observe how each child participates and applies new literacy skills in the group setting.

At the end of the term, families receive a written summary outlining:

  • The skills targeted in the group
  • Observed changes from the start to the end of the program
  • Recommendations for next steps

This may include progressing to another group, transitioning to individual therapy, or continuing with home and school-based support.

Got Questions About Our Literacy Groups?

Here are some of the most common questions our new clients have:

Literacy Skills Groups are delivered in a small group setting and focus on specific early reading skills using structured, explicit teaching.
While children receive targeted support, this program does not provide the same level of individualisation as one-to-one therapy. For some children, individual therapy may be recommended instead.

No formal assessment is required.

Instead, families complete a short placement form based on parent observations of their child’s current skills. This allows our clinicians to determine whether a group program is appropriate and which group would be the best fit.

Groups are not based on age or school year, but on literacy skill level.

Children are grouped with peers who have similar early reading skills, which helps ensure the pace of learning is appropriate and effective for everyone in the group.

Each group has a specific literacy focus, such as:

  • Letter–sound knowledge and early blending and segmenting
  • Reading and spelling consonant clusters (eg lift, crab)
  • Long vowels and longer words

Groups typically include 3–5 children.

Smaller groups allow for targeted instruction while still providing the benefits of learning alongside peers. Some groups may include additional support staff to ensure children are well supported.

If a group program is not the right fit, we will recommend alternative options. This may include:

  • Individual therapy
  • A different group at another time
  • Support strategies to use at home or school

Our goal is to recommend the most appropriate support, not simply place children into groups.

NDIS funding can be used for this group if your NDIS goals align with the purpose of the group. NDIS client may need some additional services prior to starting such as a support plan development in line with NDIS requirements.

Private health funding sometimes covers group programs, you would need to check this with your health insurer.

Medicare rebates are only for individual therapy so will not be able to be used for this group.

Literacy Skills Groups run as a fixed term program (Weeks 2–10 Term 1).
Families commit to attending weekly sessions for the full program, as consistent attendance is important for progress and group cohesion. If a child misses a session, the fee still applies and some homework will be sent.

Yes.

At the end of the program, families receive a written summary outlining:

  • The skills targeted in the group
  • Observed changes from the beginning to the end of the program
  • Recommendations for next steps

This summary reflects your child’s participation and learning within the group setting.

In some cases, yes.

Depending on your child’s progress and current skill level, recommendations may include:

  • Repeating a similar group to consolidate skills
  • Progressing to a more advanced literacy group
  • Transitioning to individual therapy
  • Continuing with classroom and home-based support only

To get started:

  1. Complete the Literacy Group Placement Form
  2. Our team will review suitability and group availability
  3. If appropriate, you will receive an enrolment offer
